Hey there, it's been awhile. Over the past few months there have been some exciting changes for me and McAlpin Creative LLC (including a complete kitchen remodel DIY-style), but I will save all that for another time.
Today, I want to talk about something that is a bit outside of my usual "groove"—I want to chat about your health. Yes, I know. You are here for marketing and business insight! Not some boring old "eat healthy" lecture. But, hear me out.
Over the past few months I have noticed something that a lot of us bosses neglect, and I think it is worth discussing. Here it is, plain and simple:
Your business needs balance. Your business needs you.
That's it. My grand revelation. Your business cannot succeed, will not succeed, unless you are at your best, and your health is at the top of that list.
Over the next few months, I am going to sprinkle in some of my favorite #boss health tips to keep your business moving forward, even when that coveted "balance" seems impossibly difficult to obtain.
Why? Because obtaining personal balance and making healthy choices is one of the best strategies you can use to get your business on the track for success. So, to kick it off, here are my top five reasons to make #Healthylife choices part of your business strategy.
1. Choosing balance allows you to practice control
As business owners, it is easy to allow hectic schedules and endless projects to consume our days. Too often, this results in a lack of control over other areas of our lives, especially our health. We neglect the practices that we know are good for us, in favor of "quicker and easier" solutions like fast food, skipping the gym and over-indulging in that caffeine we've grown to crave.
By choosing balance in your diet, activity level and daily habits, you are choosing to exercise control over vital portions of your life. This will ultimately lead to more energy, greater feelings of accomplishment and less added stress to your already busy schedule.
2. Healthy habits give you greater amounts of energy
Who doesn't want more energy? Between your business, family and hobbies, I'm sure you could use an extra dose of two.
By making #Healthylife choices, you are choosing to invest in your body and mind, ultimately leading to greater levels of energy to help you conquer the day!
3. Healthy habits reduce stress
Studies have proven that people with healthier lifestyles report encountering less stress on a daily basis. By choosing to empower yourself through healthy choices, you can greatly increase your own happiness, both inside and outside of the office.
4. Taking time for your health allows you to refocus your business
Sometimes we all need a bit of refocusing. As we dive deeper into 2016, maybe it is time to look past your new business strategies and ask yourself how you can better refocus your business from the inside. Making and encouraging healthy choices has kept organizations like Buffer energized and effective during even the rockiest of transitions.
When you choose to refocus your priorities, placing an emphasis on health, you begin to see other areas of your business that could benefit from healthier habits as well. This ultimately leads to more intentional decisions and business strategies.
5. Healthy habits often reduce clutter
Clutter is toxic. It can build barriers that shut down our creativity, productivity and efficiency. By adding more structure to your days, and making healthier choices, you can help fight the clutter. Here are two of my favorite ways to cut out the clutter in my own life/business:
Get up early: I intentionally wake up and start my day two hours before I am scheduled to begin "work." This gives me time to have a balanced meal, do some quiet reading and set myself up for a successful day.
Build a structured schedule: Rather than simply taking on each project as it come, I intentionally schedule out each portion of my day based on my most creative time blocks. For instance, I am more effective and creative during the morning hours, so I place larger more thought-intensive projects earlier in my day, scheduling lighter work for the afternoons.
